The company is celebrating by crowdsourcing stories from users about how the social network has affected their lives.
This milestone was expected for about a month, and it’s maybe even a little behind considering the company was growing at about 50 million users every two months and said it crossed 400 million users in February.
The next 500 million will be an altogether different challenge. Facebook is running up against the sheer population limits of potential users in the developed Read More...

Android 1.5 and 1.6 are still major players in the field, together accounting for some 41 percent of all Google-powered phones in use as of July 15 — but for the first time, Android 2.1 is on significantly more than half of the phones out there, up from an even 50 percent in mid-June. 55.5 percent of devices are running Eclair to be exact, and Froyo also makes an appearance with a little sliver of 3.3 percent — an anemic figure obviously hampered by the fact that no one outside Google itself (on the now nearly-defunct Nexus One) has deployed Read More...

This weekend, the folks over at Droid-Life acquired an image that seems to answer a question a lot of potential DROID 2 owners have. Will the DROID 2 ship with Android 2.2 — Froyo — or will they have to wait for Verizon to release an update? Well, luckily it looks like the answer to the first half of that question is: yes, the DROID 2 will ship with Android 2.2. The image obtained by DL shows a D2 prototype running Froyo, with Verizon branding, complete with Motorola’s not-really-BLUR UI (joy). Android 2.2, an improved keyboard, and a 1 GHz Read More...

We’d argue that the “wow” factor still isn’t there quite yet, but we’ll admit: Symbian^4 is clearly going to be a bit of a departure from the versions that came before it. The Symbian Foundation has posted the first handful of home screen UI shots on its developer wiki recently showing redesigned widgets, app categories and search, pop-up menus, and a standard-issue numeric touchscreen keypad — and unlike Nokia’s concept videos from before, these are from a real emulator running real code. While MeeGo is still expected to dominate the high end of its range, Nokia’s expecting to use Symbian^4 Read More...

In a brief blog post, and two-plus minute video, Adobe, Inc. demoed Flash 10.1 running on the yet-to-be released Motorola DROID X. Adobe Sr. Technology Evangelist, Ted Patrick, demoed a quick Flash game and an AP World Cup application. At the end of the video Patrick reiterates that Flash player 10.1 and Android 2.2 will be coming to the DROID X in “late summer.” Hit the jump to check out the video.

We’ve certainly gotten a peak at quite a few Droid 2 details so far, but word of a release date has unfortunately never been among them. That now looks to have changed, however, with the folks at Android and Me reporting that a “trustworthy source” has informed them that the phone will be launching on August 23rd. According to the site, that date was apparently chosen so the Droid 2 would be the first phone to ship with Android 2.2 out of the box, although that of course remains to be confirmed (current test versions of the Droid 2 are Read More...

While the various and sundry Android manufacturers are all scrambling (or casually strolling) toward official Android 2.2 updates for their manifold handsets, someone managed to get Google’s Froyo running on the Nokia N900. Turns out, the two are a pretty great pair, with some super speedy browsing (like, really fast) and decent hardware support outside of an unfortunate lack of memory card support. Hit up the video after the break to see it in action, the browser starts kicking around the 4:45 mark.

During a meeting with representatives from Nokia, CNet Australia was informed that the Nokia N8 will be the last Nseries handset to ship running Symbian. After it launches, all future Nseries handsets will be running MeeGo. But that isn’t to say that this is the end of the line for Symbian-based handsets from Nokia. Instead of placing Symbian on its flagship devices, the S60 version of the OS will be relegated to middle of the road handsets from the X and Eseries, while S40 will be loaded up on handsets from the Cseries.

The Orphan iPed M16’s shown up in the wild, and thankfully, it’s running Android 2.1. This 10.2-inch, cloney-looking fellow has a 1GHz ARM Cortex A8 processor, 256MB of DDR2 RAM, 1GB of Nand ROM, plus a miniUSB port, Ethernet and Wifi, and a webcam. Optional add-ons? Well, there’s the keyboard, Bluetooth and the 3G model if you want to get real fancy. We have to tell you that the tablet (which is in the video below) still doesn’t look that compelling to us. There’s no word on availability or pricing of this one, but we have a feeling it’s not Read More...

Google likes to keep a close eye on what percentage of its mobile OS, by version number, is out in the wild. Google accomplishes this chore by polling Android devices that check-in to Google’s Market application; they then publish a bi-weekly report to developers. Today, the latest report was published, and it looks like Android 2.1 has hit the 50% mark for worldwide Android handsets saturation. The platform breakdown looks like this: Android 2.1 – 50.0%, Android 2.01 – 0.3%, Android 2.0 – 0.1%, Android 1.6 – 25.0%, Android 1.5 – 24.6%, Android 1.1 – 0.1%. Hopefully, in the coming Read More...
