Flip MinoHD Video Camera Review

Designed for ease of use, the Flip MinoHD is the newest model (3rd generation) of the popular Flip video camera.  Available in black, this high definition video camera comes with 8GB of memory and can record for a couple of hours.

If you are looking for something new in the 3rd generation Flip MinoHD video camera, you may be in for a bit of disappointment.  The design, features, and operation of the MinoHd remains basically the same, with a few improvements.

Clear HD Video

Enhanced video technology is the secret behind the Flip MinoHD’s superb high definition video.  The video camera comes with built-in image stabilization and 720p resolution.  It captures images at the rate of 60 frames per second, double the standard frame rate of most video cameras.

A 2-inch color LCD screen display allows you to view your recordings.  The screen’s anti glare feature ensures that videos can be viewed even under bright lights.  In addition, the device’s AAC audio provides superb audio quality for your video clips.

The MinoHD’s built-in 8GB of memory is more than enough to store your video recordings without the need for additional memory.

Sleek Design

With its black matte front and rounded edges, the Flip MinoHD video camera continues to dazzle with its super sleek design.  It’s about the size of a cell phone, meaning you can easily take it with you everywhere you go.  You can capture all the action with the handy MinoHD.

Easy to Use

Critics may say that the Flip MinoHD offers only a limited range of options for video recording but some people view this as an advantage.  That’s because it means that using the MinoHD is easy as can be.  It’s the equivalent of a point-and-shoot camera.  All you have to do is switch on the device, point it at what you want to film, and press the big red button to start recording.  You can start capturing high definition video in a matter of seconds.

With virtually no settings to fool around with, it’s very hard to do anything wrong.  As some people have noted, the lack of options may be frustrating for some, but others actually find it quite liberating.  You can point and shoot what you want without worrying about setting, modes, and other confusing options.

The Flip MinoHD can only capture video at 720p with a frame rate of 60 frames per second (fps).  This is an improvement on the previous model, which was only able to film at 30 fps.  The result is smoother motion especially in an outdoor environment.

You can watch your HD videos directly on your HDTV, via the HDMI output.  If you want to share your video, simply flip out the device’s USB arm and connect the MinoHD video camera to your computer.  You can launch the pre-loaded FlipShare software to provide a direct pipeline to Facebook, YouTube, Twitter, or MySpace,

Battery Life

An internal Lithium-ion battery provides enough power for 2 hours of use.  The battery can be recharged through the Flip’s built-in USB arm, or using the Flip Video Power Adapter (sold separately).

The preloaded FlipShare software allows you to organize your files into folders.  FlipShare can be used to edit your videos, add music, create video presentations, capture still photos, and share your recordings with friends and family by posting them online to your Twitter or Facebook accounts.

No Stills

There’s one thing many people would like to see in the Flip MinoHD video camera, and that’s the ability to take still photos.  Certainly, many would want to carry just one device to take care of their photo and video needs.  It’s too bad that the MinoHD does not have this feature.

Lack of Additional Storage

The 3rd generation black Flip MinoHD video camera comes with 8GB of internal memory but does not offer an option to add storage.  The built-in memory is good for about 2 hours worth of video recording.  After that, you will have to connect to a computer and offload your video clips.

Overall Quality

When it comes to performance, the Flip MinoHD compares favorably with the competition.  Images are crisp and detailed, and colors are vibrant if somewhat oversaturated.  With its capture rate of 60 fps, the motion is smoother.  Image stabilization also helps improve the clarity of the videos.  Although it’s an electronic stabilizer, as opposed to a superior optical image stabilizer, it does a good job of eliminating fuzziness in the images.

  • Very easy to use
  • Good quality HD video
  • Compact, small and light
  • FlipShare software allows easy editing and sharing

  • Lacks a dedicated photo mode for still images

What Customers Say

Judging by the number of positive reviews for the product, it’s safe to say that the Flip MinoHD video camera is a hit.  Many people like the Flip for its ease of use, small size, picture quality, and software.

Some of the drawbacks that customers noted include the lack of additional storage and ability to take still photos.  There is also no way to change the built-in battery.

The Flip MinoHD Video Camera is not for everyone but it is perfectly designed for people who do not want a lot of fuss when making video recordings.  This device is the equivalent of a compact point-and-shoot camera.
